Project 1 - Famous people - Familiar faces - Diagramatic Description

In this project we were required to investigate and to explore how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements such as solid objects, planes, lines and frames. Upon completion of the project, students should be able to achieve a level of understanding for the works assigned and should also be able to apply the idea and concept to their project later.

The idea of using pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea would also be in cooperated into this assignment.

Learning Outcomes  of this Project

  • To enable shudents to recognise great architects and their works done

  • To understand basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames.

  • Ability to put in a ‘diagram’ format and analyse architectural work of selected architect

Project 2A - Bird watching tower

In group of two, we were to begin with a volume in the form of a solid cube 3 x 3 x 3 meter. By selecting a character, we were to design a bird watching tower found at fraser's hill, for the purpose of relaxing/contemplation. It should include the activities of resting, meditation, observation, viewing etc. in which furniture and equipment must fit and be incorporated with the design. This structure should correspond to the site that we have chosen. Adequate access, circulation and fenestration are mandatory.

The aim of this project is to generate form and space through architectural conceptualisation, with the emphasis on exploring the user requirement and simple spatial organization skills and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. Students are shown the importance of using the art of crafting and making: drawing(s) and model(s) as a critical design tool as part of the design process.

Project 2B - Retreat House at Fraser's hill, Allan's Water

In project 2B, we were required to further develop our project 2A into a retreat house at Allan's water for our chosen character. A retreat denotes a place affording peace, quiet, privacy and security where its occupant would reside for a short period of time. This retreat must function as habitable architectural spaces to enable the activity associated with living, dining, cleansing, cooking, storage and such within the built up space of 150 square meter. The relationship between our design and the context is important in making the retreat unique to its landscape and activity.

The objectives of this project are:

•       To introduce the notions of concepts, program and process in architectural design

•       To introduce students’ to the understanding of user specific design requirements

•       To introduce the notions of space, form and function in architectural design

•       To introduce awareness of site specific design and the process of site analysis

As a group we were taken to Fraser's hill for site investigation and ‘nature scanning’ to initiate the preliminary conceptual approach of the design. It was important for our work to reflect your understanding of how architecture is created by applying the basic design principles and spatial organization skills. Our work must also illustrate an understanding of how a building is conceptualize and transformed into reality.
