Architecture Design Studio 1 - Self Expression through Object

In this project we were introduced to elements and principles of visual art through designing a mask. We had to use the mask to reveal our own character. While doing so, we had the freedom as well as the chance to work with different materials and different textures and aligning the mask to our own choice.

My design for the mask represents the sporty character inside me. The basic design used for the mask was a puzzle, symbolising the team spirit and team play. Then comes the metal frame used to make the outline of the mask as well as the curves of the face. Copper wires have been used to show the strength required in sports and the malleability to show the keeping fit part of it. Afterwards the pieces of smooth cloths have been used to cover the plaster mask made by myself. This was done to show that the surface does not count much. It matters the most what is on the inside, ie; the hard and strong plaster. The concepts can be applied to the real scenario in life.

Now, I know more about my characteristics and personalities. Also, through the process of translation and interpretation based on what I have abstracted and redefined, I learned how to construct a representational piece of art that best represents me. Although I encountered some problems of translating my personalities into an artwork at first, I used different kind of approaches to design thinking and production.

Project 2 - Life Capsule

In project 2, we learned about the interaction between human body and space. We had to research human anthropometrics and were taught logical shapes and forms. The assignment was that we had to design a life capsule for ourselves, in which we had to carry atleast 3 activities. Ours was the following; relaxing, meditation and playing musical instrument.

After having designed and made the life capsule, we understood the relation of human body to space, and human behaviour according to the space. The size limitations also had to be taken into consideration. Different parts of the human body had to be measured before designing the life capsule.

Project 3 - Dreamscape for the self

In project 3, we were given a site and told to design a dream space for our dream client within the required space of 110 meter square. My dream clien was Leonardo DiCaprio, and the space designed was based on his movie 'Inception'

The design basically represents the concept of the movie in a space. My design was divided into 4 parts: First part where Leonardo DiCaprio enters the inception. Secondly, he has to go through a lot of difficulties before finally finding what he wants. Then he got to make his way out, and finally he reaches the end and makes his way out. Throughout the journey, he is guided by natural light which is his incentive to keep moving forward.

Here we can see the narrow entrance to represent the level of difficulty to enter an inception. The view from the entrance makes Leonardo DiCaprio wonder what is on the inside. The block following the entrance hava an irregular pattern and is tilted. This has been used to show that Leonardo DiCaprio goes through different levels of subconsciousness[different dimensions] before reaching where he wants.

In this picture, the interior is shown which is the pathway for Leonardo DiCaprio. He is faced by a maze which represents the confusion and the troubles he has to face before getting at the end. Again, he is shown the right way by the natural light coming from windows on the roof and the sides near the exit.

While making it through the make, which is located mainly in the biggest block, Leonardo goes through all the information in the person's mind. Him wandering through the space inside represents going through the information.

In this picture we can also see why Leonardo DiCaprio is encouraged to move forward. The light at the end of the tunnel keeps him moving forward and encourages him. Moreover he is pursuaded that his idea lies at the end.

Here we can see a light buld which has been used to represent the idea Leonardo DiCaprio wants to steal. It is located at the end of the space.

After having gone through all the information, he becomes closer to the end where bright light starts coming in. He is further encouraged to move forward and makes it. Outside there, was lying a light bulb - used to represent the idea he wants to steal. He then proceeds to make his way out of the inception and into the bright light [ used to represent freedom ]

After completing this project within 7 weeks, I learned how to design a space that can best represent an idea or conceptual narrative. I have also used the design principles and elements, like transformation of form, repetition, rhythm, hierarchy and more in my design. Also, I learned to explore and apply different variation of materials to enhance the sensory experience of my space. And most importantly, I learned how to distinguish the role of scale and proportion in the relationship between designed space and human body.
