Module Outiline
The Design Communications module introduces necessary skills for the appropriate communication of architectural design. It consists of different means of visualization and expression of space and spatial ideas through architectural drawings to prepare students to have the required skills in design projects. These skills are taught through various freehand sketches and constructed drawing held indoor as well as outdoor.
Project 1
Project 1 is divided into Project 1A and Project 1B. Project 1A required us to use free-hand sketching to record our observation and perception of the two exterior and two interior spaces. On the other hand, we are required to produce four variations of tonal value sketch of an object they chose in Project 1B. After gone through the first project, which are Project 1A and 1B, the notion of space in architecture form became clearer and I learned how to appreciate the space. Four basic techniques of rendering were used; which are hatching, cross hatching, scribbling and stippling to develop skills in sketching as a mode of communication. Besides, I have learnt how to visualize a space through observation and perception. Hence it enhances the skills in creating depth and tone to produce an architecture sketch.

Project 2A
Here we are given a building named Farnsworth House [Mies Van Der] and we are required to produce orthographic drawings: plans, elevations and sections of it. After having gone through the booklet given to us, we had to research further on standard dimensioning and measurements of the building. The interior of the building also had to be redesigned on our own. In the process of redesigning the interior, we had to research a lot on the internet about representation of household furniture, architectural symbols and conventions linked to the building. When it comes to inking the orthographic drawings, I learned that there are different types of lines, different line weights and also the quality of lines. Through Project 2A, the appropriate way to record and to produce architectural information clearly in a manual way can be assimilated easily

Project 2B
In Project 2B, we are required to produce an axonometric projection of the Farnsworth House building. It was a first step towards starting to visualize a building in 3 dimensions. First, i referred to my previous project, Project 2A to understand further the building structure and the measurements that I had throughout this project so that I can produce my axonometric drawing. After having drawn it, I understood what axonometric projection is about and I learned the appropriate techniques to produce it. Besides that, I learned how to communicate my understanding of architectural details and spatial values in three-dimensional with clarity and accuracy. In this Project 2B, I have also improved the usage of line weights and neatness of lines compared to my Project 2A. Besides, I have known the importance of the layout of a professional presentation board.

Project 2C
Project 2C required us to produce two perspectives drawing [one-point and two-point perspectives] of the Farnsworth House (one interior and one exterior). I have used my orthographic drawings (2D) to translate into this perspectives drawings (3D). In the process of drawing the perspectives, I had to deal with numerous lines on a single drawing and to identify the required ones, hence teaching me the importance of neatness on drawings. I learned about what is picture plane (PP), viewing angle, stationary point (SP) and more. The notion of expressing drawings or spacial ideas in a more appealing way was taught through one-point and two-point perspectives. Also, I have learnt that planning is very important as I need to consider what views and details to capture and show before drawing them. To enhance the perspective drawings, different light weights have been used to make it more lively.
